Over the last twenty years, my phone has woken me up at 2 am so many times that I’m permanently allergic to six out of ten ringtones. I started my career as "the IT guy" at a small manufacturing company. I’ve managed bandwidth (T1s and MPLS), bare-metal (back when it was just called “servers”), virtualization platforms (VMware and OpenStack), early “private cloud” solutions, and eventually the three major hyperscalers. I've spent countless hours troubleshooting problems, weekends patching servers, and late nights upgrading infrastructure. At some point, I looked at my resume and realized I was a “Managed Services” executive.

In the early days of public cloud, best practices were scarce and experience even scarcer. Over the past decade I’ve seen my clients evolve into skilled infrastructure-as-code practitioners. These tools can make life easier for engineers, but they quickly start making noise and eating up time. I see a common pattern: an engineer has a preferred tool and spends six months configuring it.
